The After Christmas

This week we got the update of what he did for Christmas. He begins by responding to a comment I had made in an email I had sent him the night before that it felt like a lot longer then 4 days since we talked to him on the phone on Christmas day. Also in his email he responds to an article from a 1974 Ensign that I sent him. Knowing my son and after hearing his tone of voice and comments on the phone on Christmas I was concerned that he was stressing out and, being the rule bound boy he is, trying so hard to follow the rules and be perfect that he wasn’t having fun and enjoying the joys of being a missionary. I attached the article below so you all can have a feel for what I said to him. Following the article is his email.

“The Gospel and a Sense of Humor, Too

John E. Lewis

Elder Matthew Cowley tells how President J. Reuben Clark, Jr., called him to be mission president in New Zealand. His final instruction was “Now, kid” [he calls me kid] “now, kid, don’t forget rule six.”

“What is rule six?”

“Don’t take yourself too darn seriously.”

“What are the other five rules?”

“There aren’t any,” answered President Clark.

We can take things seriously that we are not solemn about. By the same token, solemnity does not necessarily mean that we are taking the gospel seriously; we are taking ourselves seriously.

There are indications in Church history that Joseph Smith, careful to refrain from lightmindedness as he was, still enjoyed joking with other Church leaders.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is not grim; surely the Lord intended for us to enjoy ourselves even in Church meetings. Perhaps the secret lies in another statement by Elder Cowley: “I like to get fun out of this business—good, wholesome fun—get a kick out of it. When I obey the principles of the Gospel, I am the happiest man on earth.”

Perhaps this is what the Lord means by “… men are that they might have joy” (2 Ne. 2:25)—to take the principles of the gospel seriously without taking ourselves too seriously. On the way to exaltation, we ought to enjoy ourselves.

John E. Lewis, Orem Third Ward, Orem Utah West Stake”

Grant’s email:

“Weird huh? how its only been a few days but it feels like a week or more to me too. Time is very different, no school to keep track of it for me, so sometimes a day feel s like a week or a month, other times it seems like an hour is an eternity. We had pizza for dinner, on Christmas, yummy freezer pizza from Walmart we had bought our first week here. sooooooo you guys got an x-box 360, that is pretty sweet. annnd spencer lost his front teeth? well Christmas here was alright, different, but still invited the spirit. On Christmas eve we had dinner with Hermano Bernard and his family in the zone leaders area. It was awesome, he is a artist and has some really cool paintings, in the pictures, that is him in front of one of his paintings that won first place in a church art competition in the late 90s.

On Christmas day we got up and opened what presents we hadn’t opened the day before… yeah we were impatient. Also the packages that were sent by aunt jen and Brother Ferrell were delivered on Thursday, yes I’m keeping the Astrojax and the Yo-yo. Thank you to both of them for the awesome boxes.

Well now for my companion, and yes he got to call his family but once again there were difficulties setting up the call, and now a bit of his story. When he was four years old he was in a car accident, they were t-boned by a work truck going about 50mph. He has had back problems and several therapy sessions since. So on Thursday we went to a Health Clinic/chiropractor to get him looked at.

I sat in waiting room for about an hour and a half while he got xrays and such. We called president Ames that night, and from what he understood about my companions condition, he could be sent home with only 5 months left. That was  bit worrying for me, especially since he is my trainer and friend, he has helped me to not be stressed on the mission, really teaching me how to enjoy it, and be myself while being an obedient servant of the lord.

Friday we went back to the chiropractor, where he was told that his spine was actually fractured in the accident, he is missing some deteriorated bone, and in general, the equivalent of the spine of a 45 year old. There is hope though, he will probably have to regularly check with the doctors throughout his life, and for now, he may not go home, but we will have to see the chiropractor about 3 times a week for the next 3 weeks. As far as him being sick, because he has been that too for the past 2 months, we are going to urgent care today to get that dealt with, so that will be good for him.

I like the story you sent, it teaches very similarly to how my companion has been teaching me, helping me to understand also who I am and why did I choose to serve.
I love you all so much, and have some pictures to send as well.
Take care and Have a happy New Year!

I love you,
Love Grant, Elder Hagen

So we just got back from urgent care, and decided to use the rest of our e-mail time. My companion has the same thing he had in May that made him cough up blood and stay in bed for 2 weeks….. this should be an exciting experience! also in the ward that I am in they are beginning to focus on family history, is it possible to e-mail a copy of Laban Morrill’s story? and in Family Search.org I traced a line of grandpa Morrill’s family back to Adam but none of grandpa Hagen’s history is on the website.

Love you so much!”
Christmas morning, we had what is usually a district meeting was turned into a, we had a couple elders share lessons, The district leaders and Hermana Gwynn sang.

And we had a white elephant gift exchange, the rule was under $5 or something found in your apartment, I gifted a dollar candle in a glass jar, and a pack of mini twizzlers I bought at Walmart. and by the end of the exchange i had this… so i put it in Elder Barnettes bed for about an hour, then it now lives in our closet downstairs

Christmas in Texas

“Well my week was pretty good, cold, but good and full of the spirit. We went on a companion exchange yesterday, I went with one of the elders in the District Leader’s trio, so Elder Christensen was my companion for a day and Elder Barnette went with them for the day. That was pretty fun, lots of biking, I ate it pretty hard last night on my bike, went to fix my side bag as it was starting to get caught on my back tire, the bike slid out from under me, I over corrected and ended up flipped over on the pavement. Surprisingly I am unhurt, not even bruised, and my coat is not ripped up.
The Christmas devotional was amazing, we watched the movie How Great a Treasure on the Book of Mormon. Then president Ames and Sister Ames gave talks, hers was on how miracles are demonstrations of faith, and President kind of continued that talk but also had an Elder read a Christmas story he put together of only scriptures. It was really cool because it started way before Christ’s birth, in the premortal life, how we choose to follow him, and how we defeated Satan so we rejoice, so angels rejoice at the birth of our Savior our Lord. It was a different perspective on why and greater magnified how important Christ’s birth was for all of mankind. After the talks we were handed white large envelopes in which had letters from you, thank you so much for these letters, they really meant a lot to me and reminded me how much I love you, and all of you.
Now to answer your big question… Last week president Ames said we can have a phone call to our families, about 30-45 minutes long on Christmas. So our phone number starts with an 817, not a sales call, a Texas area code. He also said to remind our families to delete the numbers after the call. My companion is going to call his family at 8 Texas time so the best for me to call you guys would be 7 Texas Dallas area time. I don’t know if that is an hour or two ahead of California. Make sure that everything else you want to do, setup for the call, joint call with other people is figured out before the call, etc., Elder Barnette was telling me how last year his family spent about 15 minutes trying to set up a joint call with other family and hadn’t practiced how to earlier, so it just burnt away his time. I cant wait to call you guys and hear your voices again!
Have a merry Christmas to all of you, remember this time to recognize with greater love our Savior Jesus Christ, and why that is so important to us, why families are so important, why we call him Hermano Mayor. Take care and have a Merry Christmas!”

This is his (president Ames) Christmas story, I really enjoy it and thought i would share it with all of you

The Full Christmas Story:
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
(John 1:1-4)
22 Now the Lord had shown unto me, Abraham, the intelligences that were organized before the world was; and among all these there were many of the noble and great ones; 23 And God saw these souls that they were good, and he stood in the midst of them, and he said: These I will make my rulers; for he stood among those that were spirits, and he saw that they were good; and he said unto me: Abraham, thou art one of them; thou wast chosen before thou wast born. 24 And there stood one among them that was like unto God , and he said unto those who were with him: We will go down, for there is space there, and we will take of these materials, and we will make an earth whereon these may dwell; 25 And we will prove them herewith, to see if they will do all things whatsoever the Lord their God shall command them; (Abraham 3:22-25)
7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, 8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. 10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. 11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. (Revelation 12:7-11)
26 ¶And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. (Genesis 1:26-28)
25 Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy. (2 Nephi 2:25)
6 And after many days an angel of the Lord appeared unto Adam, saying: Why dost thou offer sacrifices unto the Lord? And Adam said unto him: I know not, save the Lord commanded me. 7 And then the angel spake, saying: This thing is a similitude of the sacrifice of the Only Begotten of the Father, which is full of grace and truth. (Moses 5:6-7)
13 And it came to pass that I looked and beheld the great city of Jerusalem, and also other cities. And I beheld the city of Nazareth; and in the city of Nazareth I beheld a virgin, and she was exceedingly fair and white. 14 And it came to pass that I saw the heavens open; and an angel came down and stood before me; and he said unto me: Nephi, what beholdest thou? 15 And I said unto him: A virgin, most beautiful and fair above all other virgins. 16 And he said unto me: Knowest thou the condescension of God? 17 And I said unto him: I know that he loveth his children; nevertheless, I do not know the meaning of all things. 18 And he said unto me: Behold, the virgin whom thou seest is the mother of the Son of God, after the manner of the flesh. 19 And it came to pass that I beheld that she was carried away in the Spirit; and after she had been carried away in the Spirit for the space of a time the angel spake unto me, saying: Look! 20 And I looked and beheld the virgin again, bearing a child in her arms. 21 And the angel said unto me: Behold the Lamb of God, yea, even the Son of the Eternal Father! Knowest thou the meaning of the tree which thy father saw? 22 And I answered him, saying: Yea, it is the love of God, which sheddeth itself abroad in the hearts of the children of men; wherefore, it is the most desirable above all things. 23 And he spake unto me, saying: Yea, and the most joyous to the soul. (1 Nephi 11:13-23)
14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a Virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14)
6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of peace. (Isaiah 9:6)
1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cæsar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. 2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judæa, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. 6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. 15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. 16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. 18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. (Luke 2:1-20)
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man. (Luke 2:42-52)
23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, (Luke 3:23)
16 ¶And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. 17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, (Luke 4:16-18)
32 Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God. (Moroni 10:32)

Texas 1: Cold but Happy

Well, after a week and a half of no communication we have come to our first p-day and first emails. It’s such a relief. I just don’t know how parents stayed sane in years past waiting to get word from their missionaries. He sounds wonderful and busy but cold. I think I will be sending another sweater and long shirts form missionarymall.com today.

I have posted his email to me and pieces from the one he sent his dad. I don’t get all my questions answered, but just to know he is healthy and happy is enough.

Dad’s email:

“Hey ya we are supposed to only take an hour for e-mail so long letters are awesome to be mailed, and i will write back on p-day my area is the haltom City area, in the Hurst 3rd ward which is the only spanish ward in our stake, actually the ward covers two stakes. there are nine missionaries in our ward including us. It is a set of sister missionaries, the zone leaders, the district leader and his two companions, then us me and elder Barnette. Our ward missionaries are our district and there are only two districts, english and spanish. We are the only two spanish bike missionaries right now so that is kind of fun. it has been good, The ward is awesome, I gave a talk on Sunday for about 5 to 10 minutes in spanish, that was exciting… Our area specifically is doing a lot of reactivation, lots of the hispanic people are members about 20 families in just our area that are not active. We are teaching a couple investigators so that is nice. all in all it has been good.”
” got the small package with the bike lights, and long johns in. Thank you for that, when i recieved it, it was similar to a prayer being answered as it is so cold here. My compainion is trustworthy and wouldnt steal it. I also wanted to call from the airport, unfortunately i didnt have the opportunity to and neither did my CCM companion but the other two missionaries did, their debit cards were accepted. The phone booth machines were old and worn and didnt read cards very well.”

Mom’s email:

“Well you get the long email! I guess i can talk about our first days here. we got up at 4 in the morning to get into a van that left the CCM at 5. loaded up all of our luggage, a worker from the CCM met us at the airport and he helped us get our boarding passes if we needed help with spanish. our flight was only 4 elders, the 4 from our district and two of them had debit cards that were read by the old and worn phone booths, i tried to call from several phone booths for a good half hour. our flight left at 9 and arrived about 11.

On the plane I tried to talk to the two people in the seats next to me, but they were focused on their trips, talking about what cities to go to where all the “young people party” they werent terribly interested in a conversation with me. When we got the Texas we were greeted by the assistants to the president. who helped us with our bags and we waited until 11 other missionaries arrived from the MTC in Provo, while we waited, us 5, one of the Assistants went inside the airport with the president to greet the new missionaries, we handed out pass along cards and just kind of talked with anyone and everyone we could find. Elder ray and I began to talk to taxi drivers and got to two before the other Elders arrived. we had dinner and took pictures with the president at the mission home. then we all spent the night in the Assistants apartment, I had a couch to myself. the next morning we met our trainers, my companion’s name is Elder Barnette, and so far so good, he knows spanish pretty well and is helping me to adjust to Texas. We live in a city called Haltom, the address is

4814 Waldemar St
APT # 128
Haltom City TX 76117
any letters or packages should be sent there for the next 12 weeks as anything sent to the mission home will be withheld until a meeting, like the christmas devotionaly on Wednesday, but these dont happen frequently.
I am cold and more long sleeve shirts and a sweater would be nice. I hope to buy a scarf from a surplus place nearby. I found a spedometer for my bike with a temp gauge in it, on average especially after dinner it is around 33 degrees, not counting windchill since we are the only biking compainionship in the district.
Our district is our ward, Hurst 3rd we have 9 missionaries total in the ward. It has been alright, lots of reactivation work, feels like more than finding investigators.
The picture is of the first door i knocked, my companion took it while i wasnt even paying attention. No one answered, but we are teaching investigators, and the members in our spanish ward active or not are really friendly and all want to give us food… Oh on sunday I had to give a talk, in spanish, on the christmas season, and my testimony. with about 5 minutes to prepare as the sister who had just transferred to the ward went first. Also, my compainion and I blessed the sacrament and then there was a lunch put on by some of the members for the missionaries and bishopric. A nice homemade lasagna, it was good and a nice welcome. Also, there was a christmas, or rather the christmas choir yesterday night that we went to to meet an investigator. It was pretty awesome and reminded me of home, of the choir, they had an orchestra and a childrens choir that knew how to sing parts. all in all it was good.
Well that is about it so far, I love you, I love all of you. I want you to know that what I am doing here is not time wasted. That I am serving the lord to the best I can because I know with a surety that this is his work, his gospel, and the last dispensation to do it in. I have a strong testimony of the Book of Mormon, much stronger than when I left, it is another testament of jesus christ, the words of the prophets and their testimony and lives, lives that were spent to bring this record to our time. I know that God lives and loves us. All of you be safe, take care!
Love Elder Hagen”

Finally! And here’s his address

Grant arrived in Fort Worth Texas this last Tuesday. We have been anxiously waiting to hear news of him. So anxious that when we had not heard anything by Wednesday Gary called the Fort Worth mission office and asked if our son was there. The reply was yes he made it safe and that an email was going to be sent to us with a picture and his address. So we waited and waited and finally today the email came, 3 days after he arrived. When Gary called them he was told by the very busy sounding older sister missionary who answered the phone that there had been MANY new missionaries that day, not just Grant and the 3 others from the Mexico MTC. We don’t know how many yet, that’s a question I’ll be asking Grant, but it must be the reason it took 3 days to send us information… right?

So here is the short but sweet email and a picture of my handsome boy. I have so many questions for him. Can’t wait for Monday!

“Dear Family,

Sister Ames and I want you to know that your missionary has arrived safely in Texas.

We look forward to serving together in accomplishing the Lord’s work.  We hope you  enjoy the attached picture of your missionary as well as knowing that the missionaries are in good hands here as they are in the Lord’s service.

Your missionary’s assignment will be in Haltom City, Texas.  He will be serving with Elder Barnette.

Their apartment address is:

4808 Waldemar St.  #128

Your missionary will email on Monday which is their preparation day.  They are always

happy to hear from you.  Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

President and Sister Ames”

Last email from the CCM

This should be the last email we receive from Grant while in the CCM (or Mexico MTC for anyone new here). He leaves for Texas next Tuesday, the 10th of December, and possibly we will get a phone call from the airport. It will be so exciting to hear that deep voice again. Hopefully soon I’ll be able to post his address for Texas, which is where the work will begin.  In the mean time here is the news from the training center. The “Landon” he mentions is Landon Welker, another young man from our stake who is going to a Spanish speaking mission. He arrived at the CCM last Wednesday. We told Grant to keep an eye out for him because we had sent some mail and a photo album down. (Grant was supposed to have a small album of pictures from life at home before he left, but it didn’t happen). I think it’s funny Grant “sent four guys” to find him. I’m not sure why he couldn’t go himself? I’ll have to ask him next time.

“So last time I wrote was before thanksgiving, and quite a bit has happened, I will start from after I e-mailed on wednesday, that happened, found out that I only needed 1 stamp to mail stuff with american stamps, got a letter from Erlyn, got a letter from Grandma Hagen, got a package this week from Grandma Morrill, but i digress. After I e-mailed wednesday i was eager and anxiously waiting to see Landon, that didnt happen, but I sent four guys from my district to the Thomas S Monson building, where they drop off new missionaries to check. They found him. The next day was thanksgiving, which was also different than I expected. It was a regular day until lunch, which they had turned rather fancy for CCM comedor standards, they had covered all the tables with white table cloths, napkin dispencers with the CCM logo on them, started building a nativity scene outside that they finished on sunday. The food was wonderful, it was turkey, pavo, with mashed potatoes, a side of mexican style stuffing, and dessert was pumpkin pie with Hagan-Daz ice cream, one scoop per pie slice. That was fantastic. That night was a devotional, we sang on the stage in front of the missionaries, we sang  Venid A Mi. (come follow me) this happened after I was ushering with my district, making sure people filled up all the front rows before the back. Then sadly but still awesome, President Russel M Nelson spoke… from Provo not here… but he gave a powerful talk, every devotional and most meetings I am writing down the topics and advice. and scriptures. Also, during lunch on thanksgiving I finally met Landon, I dont see him too often, he handed me the package with the photo book and the letters, everyone loves spencer’s face in jacobs hobo stove display picture. Also, we changed classrooms, we went from a large decent spaced room for 8 people to half the size, and our teachers got changed, Hermano Murillo, our first investigator is no longer our teacher he is playing investigator for the new district in our zone now and becomes their teacher thursday. But as of this week during daily planning session he comes into our class really just to help us out, talk and laugh, he is more of a friend than a teacher really and that is ok, he had dinner with us once, came to the comedor with his newly wedded wife and sat down with us, that was cool. Sunday was fast sunday (yes I am captain obivious) and our sacrament room got changed to the seminary building instead of the third floor of the Thomas S. Monson building. My district sang Venid adoremos for the zone it was nice, we did parts, I sang base… This fast sunday President Pratt the president of the CCM, Presidnet Jones, his advisor, and their wives decided to attend our sacrament service and heard us sing. During fast sunday most of our district talked, as soon as President torres of our branch sat down after his testimony first, I decided to go, not sure why, but I just felt I needed to bear my testimony, yes in spanish. we had devotionals that night, we ushered as always. monday not much happened, saturday not much, tuesday was pizza night and we all went and bought sodas again, 8 peso (nearly 50 cents) por a half litre of sprite isnt so bad. so that leaves today. Today was temple day again, we left at 7 got back around 1 did laundry, got haircuts, the guys in our district found out they leave monday, because they are going foreign the church had to get them a flight to the CCM, cancel the return flight, then arrange flights to the missions, so they didnt know when they would leave until today. now more missionaries are arriving as I look out of the window here in the Wilfrod Woodruf computerlab i think that is the one i am in. oh and to explain, they closed my classroom because they are renovating 4 of the eight classroom buildings currently. Love you, love everyone so much, When I get to texas I will know if i can e-mail immediately, also I might beable to call you guys at the airport on tuesday, apparently we need to be on the plane at 9:30 am and the only buses that go to the airport leave at 2 am and 8 am and we need to be at the airport at least 3 hours early…

Sincerely your loving older brother, son and elder
